The Dharma Wheel Circular Pendant renders the dharmachakra at 22mm across, and the detail that makes it is in the spokes: rather than plain bars running out to the rim, each of the eight spokes is carved as a small pillar, with a shaft and a flared capital at the outer end. Eight tiny columns arranged around a hub. It is a far harder thing to cut than a plain wheel and it is what stops the piece reading as a ship’s helm.

The hub is built in rings. A plain disc at the very centre, then a ring of round beads, then a second and larger ring of teardrop-shaped petals radiating outward, each one raised and separately cut. The spokes spring from behind that outer petal ring, so the centre reads as a lotus with the wheel growing out of it.

Around the outside, three borders in sequence: a fine beaded ring just inside the field, a plain satin band, and a milgrain-cut outer rim with the edge left polished. Three different textures in the last few millimetres of the piece.

The whole face is sandblasted to an even matte with only the rim edge bright, which is the right call at this size — polish across a face this finely cut would collapse the pillars and the petals into one shine.

The bail is a plain polished tapered bail with a 3mm opening, deliberately unadorned.

The dharmachakra is the oldest symbol in Buddhist art. The eight spokes stand for the Noble Eightfold Path, and turning the wheel is the traditional phrase for the Buddha’s first teaching.
