The Happy Buddha Circular Diamond Pendant is a 25.2mm disc with Budai raised at the centre of it, laughing, eyes creased shut.
The field behind the figure is diamond-cut. Fine straight rays run from the raised portrait out to the inner edge of the frame, each one taken down with a faceting wheel so it throws a hard line of light. It is the same gold as the figure, cut two different ways: the rays flash and the figure does not, which is what pushes the portrait forward.
The relief is sandblasted and sits proud of the disc. Finished to a fine frosted matte so the modelling carries instead of flaring, and raised far enough that it throws its own shadow across the ray field as the piece turns.
A single row of large round diamonds frames the disc, set shoulder to shoulder in a prong rail that runs the full circumference and stands slightly off the rim — 52 stones across 1 carat, which is what gives the piece its outline at a distance. Seen edge-on it is a shallow dish with a plain polished wall and that stone rail standing off it.
The bail is a two-row pavé post with a 5.5mm opening.
Budai is the laughing monk of Chinese folk tradition — taken as a figure of contentment and plenty rather than of austerity. He is shown here from the chest up, robe open, a beaded mala falling across the front of it.
