The Japanese Oni Demon Mask Partial Diamond Pendant is a carved oni head in deep relief, and the whole piece turns on one decision: the diamonds go on the horns and the brows, and the face is left entirely in bare satin gold. A demon mask covered in stones stops being a face. This one keeps its expression.

The horns are the stonework. A crown of them curves up and outward from the skull in several directions, each one pavé-set along its full length and tapering to a bare point — 2.1tcw across 380 stones, almost all of it up there. Set against a matte face, the horns are the only thing throwing light, which is what makes them read as horns rather than as decoration.

The only other stones are two fine lines of pavé along the brows, following the angle of the scowl. It is a small amount of stone doing a lot of work: the brows are what make the face angry.

The carving is where the weight is. A third eye sits closed in the centre of the forehead. The mouth is open on a row of squared teeth, with the moustache and beard swept out to either side in cut locks, and flame-shaped hair framing the whole head. All of it is sandblasted to a fine matte, so the modelling holds shadow instead of flaring — on a face this detailed, polish would erase half the carving.

A skull crowns the piece above the horns, carved in the same satin finish.

The bail opening is 4mm.

The oni is the ogre-demon of Japanese folklore — horned, fanged, and worn as a warding figure rather than a friendly one. The mask is a stage and festival form.
