The Large Lion Partial Diamond Pendant is a full-body sculpture of a crowned lion in mid-stride, carved in the round rather than as a relief plate. At 3.5" wide it is a genuinely large piece, and the construction is what makes that wearable.
A note on the build: this piece is hollow with a solid back. The body is cast as a shell and closed with a full solid backing plate, so the sculpture keeps its depth and its finished reverse while the weight stays wearable. A solid casting at this size would be several times heavier and would hang badly. This is the honest trade, and it is the reason a 3.5" lion comes in at 160 grams in 18K rather than five hundred.
The stones are placed, not scattered. The mane is fully pavé-set, laid in rows that run out along each lock so the setting follows the direction the hair is carved in — it is the single largest field of stone on the piece and the thing you see first. The crown carries a pavé band around its base beneath a satin lattice cap and a small cross finial at the top. The curled tip of the tail is set as well, which closes the composition at the opposite end from the head. Nothing else is.
The body is left bare in satin gold, and that is the whole idea. Shoulder, flank, haunch and the tension down the forelegs are all modelled in the metal, and stones across them would have flattened the anatomy into glare. Iced mane, bare body — the contrast is what gives the piece its shape at a distance.
The bail is a wide two-row pavé post with a 15mm opening, which this scale needs. It takes a heavy Cuban or rope; a thin chain will not carry this piece and will not look right under it.
A lion wearing a crown topped with a cross is an old image of sovereign authority, and it is read that way across several traditions.
