The Saint Michael Archangel Diamond Oval Pendant frames a deep-relief medallion in a single row of large round brilliants, each one held in its own four-prong head with the metal cut away behind it so light comes through from both sides. At 4.2tcw across just 55 stones these are substantial individual diamonds, not micro-pavé — the row reads as a tennis bracelet wrapped around an oval rather than as a bright band.

Inside the frame, the field is dropped and sandblasted to a fine even matte, and the scene is carved into it in high relief. Michael stands with his weight forward and both wings open, in Roman-style armour with the strapped skirt beneath the cuirass, driving a spear downward with one hand while the other holds a chain. Beneath him the fallen figure lies across the bottom of the field, and flames rise along the right-hand edge.

The matte ground is the reason the relief works. Every surface of the carving — feathers, drapery folds, the links of the chain, the flames — is finished the same way, so the scene reads entirely through shadow, with no polish anywhere inside the frame to flatten it. The only brightness on the piece comes from the stones around the edge.

A plain raised rim runs between the scene and the diamond row, which is what keeps the two from crowding each other.

The bail is a two-row pavé post with a 4mm opening.
