The Decorated War Elephant Pendant is carved in the round and caught mid-stride, front-facing, at a full three inches. The ears do most of the work — fanned wide to either side, veined and wrinkled across their whole surface, with torn ragged edges rather than a clean outline. They are what gives the piece its width and its silhouette.

The trunk drops through the centre in deep ringed folds, and two heavy tusks sweep out and up past it, polished bright against the satin hide so they read first.

The decoration is the reason for the name. A worked headplate sits across the brow with scrollwork cut into it, rising to a pierced ornament at the crown just below the bail. The front legs carry armoured panels — caparison plates worked with scrolling floral motifs, each one carved rather than stamped — and the feet are finished down to the individual toenails.

The body is cut through between the legs, so the piece is genuinely open rather than a flat plate with a raised front. Everything is left in a fine satin except the tusks, trunk ridges and ear edges, which are brought up polished.

The pendant is hollow with a solid back. That is what makes three inches of sculpture wearable — the shell is closed and stiffened by a solid back plate, so it hangs at a weight you can put on a chain rather than one that lives in a case.

The bail opening is a wide 8mm, sized for a heavy chain.
