Four animals, one general, and a border of carved cloud.

The Diamond-Cut God of War with Rooster, Goat, Pig, and Foo Dog Pendant is an octagonal plate built around a deep well. The border is a thick band of carved cloud scrolls — spiral after spiral cut individually the whole way round the eight sides, satin with the crest of each curl brought up bright.

Inside, the plate drops away and the back wall of the recess is cut into a diamond-cut sunburst: fine faceted rays running from the centre out to every edge, bright enough that the figures in front of them read as silhouettes first and detail second.

Guan Yu stands at the centre in fine satin — the long beard, the headdress, scaled armour under heavy robes that break into folds at his feet. His hands are brought together in front of his chest.

Around him are the four animals, each carved as its own figure rather than pressed into the background:

• A rooster at the upper left, comb raised and tail plumage cut feather by feather
• A goat at the upper right, horns curling back over the shoulder
• A pig below him, snout down and mid-stride
• A Foo Dog at the lower right, curled mane and paw on a brocade ball

The wide flat bail above takes a 6mm opening, which this piece needs — at 112 grams in 18K it wants a heavy chain under it.

Guan Yu was a general of the late Han, deified for loyalty and righteousness and kept ever since as a guardian figure in homes and businesses.
