A quiet figure on a field that never stops moving.

The Diamond-Cut Virgin Mary Rectangular Pendant is built entirely around one contrast. Everything except the figure is diamond-cut — hand-faceted so the surface breaks light in every direction — and the Madonna herself is left in a soft satin. She is the only still thing on the piece.

The frame is worked in stacked faceted bands: a cut outer edge, a stepped inner tier, and a beaded inner ring, each cut at its own angle so the border throws light in three directions at once. Inside it, the field is cut into fine rays radiating out from behind her to the frame on all four sides — a halo that fills the whole plate rather than a ring around the head.

The Virgin is carved in low relief, turned in three-quarter profile with her head bowed and eyes lowered. The veil covers her hair and falls in long carved folds across the shoulders and down the front of the mantle, and her hands are brought together low at the bottom of the frame. The face is simple and unlined, cut shallow on purpose — all the drama in the piece is in the light around her.

The bail is a wide flat polished band left completely plain, the only unfaceted surface on the pendant.
