The Foo Dog & Skull Ring is a single sculpted head of the imperial guardian lion — the Foo Dog that has stood at temple and palace gates across China for more than a thousand years — caught mid-snarl with a human skull clenched between its fangs. Where most guardian pieces show the beast waiting, this one shows it finished.
The carving is dense and deliberate. Curled mane spirals wrap the entire head and continue down both shoulders of the band; the brow, muzzle and bared teeth are cut in deep relief; the skull sits fully modelled inside the open jaw, eye sockets and teeth intact. Set into the lion’s eyes are two rubies, the only colour on the piece and the thing that makes it look back at you.
Nearly every surface is left satin so the detail reads as depth rather than glare, with the fangs, browline and the polished shank kept bright for contrast.
This is one of the heaviest and most heavily worked rings in the collection, and it wears exactly like that.
