The Laughing Buddha and Dragon Rectangular Pendant stacks two figures into one deeply carved plate. Across the top, a dragon fills the full width — horns swept back, eyes wide, whiskers curling forward, jaw open on a row of teeth — with its scaled body and mane running out to both edges and the scales cut individually across the upper corners.

Beneath it sits Budai, and the carving gives him the whole lower two-thirds. He is caught mid-laugh: eyes creased shut, cheeks pushed up, mouth wide open. A string of prayer beads hangs across the chest, the open robe leaves the round belly bare, and a gourd and leaves are cut into it. One hand is raised at his shoulder and the other rests low, and his bare feet come out from the robe at the bottom.

At his right shoulder a small child sits smiling with both arms wrapped around a large round disc nearly as big as he is — the detail most people miss on first look, and the one that makes the piece worth handling.

The plate is thick, and the side profile shows it: the dragon’s head and the Buddha’s belly both stand well proud of the ground, so the piece carries real depth rather than reading as a stamped face. It is finished in satin throughout with polish only where the cuts catch.

Budai is the monk of contentment — fortune from wanting less, and the reason his belly gets rubbed for luck. Putting the dragon above him adds the other kind: the power that is chased rather than accepted.
