Two wealth charms stacked into one piece, with the money spilling between them.
The Money Frog and Dragon Pendant is built in three tiers, read from the bottom up.
The lower two-thirds is a dragon's head facing straight out. Broad snout with flared nostrils and a raised ridge running up the muzzle, heavy brows carved as stacked flame-like folds, and round bulging eyes with the pupils brought up polished so they catch first. The mouth is open over rows of teeth with fangs at the corners, and long whiskers sweep out to either side above a beard of fine cut strands. Around the whole head runs a mane worked strand by strand and pierced through, so light passes between the hairs instead of stopping at a solid edge.
Above the brow sits the money frog — the three-legged toad of prosperity — looking out over the dragon with its mouth open and its back and limbs worked in a warty pebbled texture. Its clawed feet grip down into the mane on both sides, so the two creatures are locked together rather than stacked.
Between them spills a heap of coins and ingots: round cash coins with square centres, some struck with characters, and boat-shaped yuanbao ingots, all polished bright against the satin around them. That contrast is the whole trick — the treasure reads as metal, the creatures read as carving.
Two loose rings hang free at the lower corners.
The piece is hollow with a solid back, which is what keeps two and a half inches of this much detail at a weight you can wear on a chain rather than one that sits in a case.
The toad is said to appear on the night of the full moon near homes about to receive good fortune; the dragon is the older symbol of power and authority. Together they are about money arriving and money being held onto.
