A phoenix curled around a single stone of green jade.
The Phoenix Wrapped Around Jade Ring is built as one bird wrapped bodily around the stone. The phoenix crowns the piece — head raised, beak forward, a swept crest of individually cut plumes behind it — and its long tail feathers sweep down the shoulders and curl back around the jade in cresting waves, so the setting is made of feathers rather than prongs.
The jade is the heart of it: a domed cabochon, deep green shading toward pale at the centre, set open so light passes through rather than bouncing off. In Chinese tradition jade stands for purity and protection, and it is the one element here that is not gold.
Everything around it is worked by hand. The shoulders are cut clean through into openwork — curling ruyi cloud scrolls, flame motifs and a small pierced disc — and the lower band is carved into segments in the manner of bamboo. A tiny stone is set in the phoenix’s eye. The surface is left satin across the carving so the detail reads as depth, with the crest, beak and stone bezel kept bright.
Because the jade is a natural stone, no two will match exactly in colour or figure.
