The Buddha in meditation, and the serpent king who kept the rain off him.
The Thai Buddha (Phra Nak Prok) Pendant is a fully sculptural piece — carved in the round, front and back, not a relief on a plate.
The Buddha sits in dhyana, legs folded, both hands resting open in his lap. He is shown in royal attire: a tall tapering rasmi finial rising from tight-curled hair, long earlobes, crossed sash bands worked in fine granulation across the chest, armlets and flared shoulder ornaments. Beneath him is a tiered pedestal with a beaded band, a pointed pleated apron down the front, and flared lotus petals at the foot.
Behind and above him fans the hood of the naga — a wall of cobra heads rising in a halo, each one ribbed and scaled, their crowns diamond-cut so the whole canopy catches light while the Buddha stays matte.
Turn it over and the piece keeps going. The naga’s body coils down the reverse in thick scaled loops, every scale edge diamond-cut, and set into the upper back is a round lotus rosette with a spoked wheel at its centre, ringed by two courses of faceted petals.
In Thai practice this is Phra Nak Prok, the Buddha of Saturday. It recalls the sixth week after the enlightenment, when a seven-day storm broke over the Buddha as he sat, and the naga Mucalinda coiled beneath him to lift him clear of the water and spread his hood as a roof until it passed.
